The story, cleaned up
A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.
Mrs. Emily W. Hoyt is expected to return from Vancouver tonight with her daughter, Norma, who was enticed from home by Horace Gates and Gertie Johnson, two well-known characters in the Tacoma underworld. A telegram received from Mrs. Hoyt last evening stated that she had found her daughter and that they would start for Tacoma this morning. Chief Malony and Detective Smith, who went after Gates and his woman pal, reached the northern city this morning and will probably arrive here with the pair tomorrow. The officers were armed with a warrant charging Gates with having criminal relations with a girl under the age of consent, and a complaint charging the woman with being an accessory before the fact.
“A telegram received from Mrs. Hoyt last evening stated that she had found her daughter and that they would start for Tacoma this morning.”
This article highlights how the legal system and public alarm in 1904 often focused on 'underworld' figures to police morality. Modern approaches to youth exploitation emphasize child protection and welfare over moralizing the 'characters' involved.
