The Old Town Merry-Go-Round Uproar
A carnival attraction at North 29th and Carr streets is driving neighbors to distraction, leading to a swarm of police calls.
The story, cleaned up
A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.
Commencing at an early hour yesterday afternoon, the telephone at police headquarters has been ringing incessantly, and the tired sergeants have listened to scores of complaints from indignant citizens of Old Town. A common, ordinary merry-go-round is responsible for the commotion. This vehicle of pleasure has been placed in the street at North Twenty-ninth and Carr, and citizens this morning informed the police that the employees of the concern were tearing up the street. Permission was given to the company to occupy the street by the commissioner of public works, and a license was secured from the city clerk's office by F. W. Farr. The complaints grew so numerous that the office of the commissioner of public works has been notified and is investigating the affair. The complaints became so numerous that Chief Malony sent an officer with instructions to tell the man to vacate at once. He refused to move, and Chief Malony then appeared before Judge Arntson for a warrant. Commissioner of Public Works Woods left shortly after 2 o'clock this afternoon to look into the matter personally.
“We should have a private telephone exchange, last night I counted 17 calls in 45 minutes myself.”
Public space in Tacoma remains a site of contest, whether it's a noisy carnival in 1907 or modern disputes over street usage and urban density. The tension between municipal permitting and neighborhood quality-of-life complaints is a classic civic struggle that continues to define city council meetings today.
