The story, cleaned up
A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.
Tacoma yesterday formally started the work of furnishing relief to the earthquake sufferers in Italy by raising a fund of $229. Meetings were held at the Tacoma Theater and at Valhalla Hall. At the latter, Italians spoke in their native tongue; at the former, Mayor Linck, T. J. Bell, Secretary Percy Sinclair, and others spoke. Committees have been appointed to canvass the city for funds to aid the sufferers. A thorough canvass of the whole city will be made.
“Tacoma yesterday formally started the work of furnishing relief to the earthquake sufferers in Italy.”
This reflects the early 20th-century tradition of community-led international aid, often organized through local theaters and fraternal halls. Tacoma's civic spirit here mirrors contemporary city-wide fundraising efforts for international disasters, though organized through digital platforms rather than door-to-door canvassing.
