A New 16-Story Landmark for Pacific Avenue
The National Realty Company acquires the Kansas block to make way for a monumental office tower.
The story, cleaned up
A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.
One of the most important real estate deals of the year was closed today by the Jullson company in the purchase from Mrs. Mead of Kansas, of the Kansas block on the east side of Pacific Avenue, for $80,000 for the National Realty company, on which the new owners will erect a great 16-story office building. The Kansas block occupies lots 9 and 10 in block 1103, Pacific Ave, and has a frontage of 50 feet on the avenue. The Meads have owned the property for years. Mr. Mead died some time ago and his wife has now sold the place, Mrs. W. H. Rattan and D. D. Calkins representing her in the transaction. The National Realty company will put on the site the finest building in Tacoma. It will be a steel building for offices, full 16 stories high and will cost over $300,000. Plans are now being finished for the structure in the office of Heath & Twitchell.
“The National Realty company will put on the site the finest building in Tacoma.”
The era of the 'skyscraper' changed Tacoma's downtown skyline permanently. Today, these historic masonry and steel structures form the backbone of the city's preserved architectural identity, even as developers continue to debate the scale of new high-rise density.
