Beat Cop Suspended After Being Beaten by Coasting Teens

A Tacoma patrolman was disciplined after rowdy youths he caught sledding in a restricted area rolled him in the snow and beat him.

The story, cleaned up

A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.

Patrolman Jarland received a decisive pummeling at the hands of rowdies who were coasting on the 21st street hill Monday night, and as a consequence has been laid off for 10 days by Chief Duley. Jarland was detailed to the hill to see that the boys did not coast across the Tacoma Avenue tracks. He stopped the coasters, and they immediately surrounded him, knocked him down, and rolled him in the snow.

“They immediately surrounded him, knocked him down, and rolled him in the snow.”

Conflicts over public space and youth recreation have long been a tension in Tacoma neighborhoods. Today, debates over infrastructure and traffic often replace the 21st-century's 'rowdies,' but the friction between authority figures trying to maintain order and the community's desire for play remains constant.
