New Emergency Hospital Opens in City Jail

The ward previously designated for female detainees has been converted into a clinical space for medical emergencies.

Work was practically completed on the new emergency hospital at the city jail this morning. The ward formerly used for girls will be used as the hospital ward, and the new cell will be turned over to the girls. Four cots will be used in the ward, and a full set of medicines and emergency surgery instruments will be installed.

“Four cots will be used in the ward, and a full set of medicines and emergency surgery instruments will be installed.”

This repurposing of space highlights the early, utilitarian approach to civic health and incarceration. Today, the intersection of criminal justice and healthcare remains a complex debate in Tacoma, moving from simple prison wards to larger systemic questions about mental health and community care.
