Boosters Lobby for a Holiday to Celebrate Tacoma Day at the Fair

Tacoma business leaders meet to discuss declaring a half-holiday so residents can attend the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition in Seattle.

Tacoma day at the A.-Y.-P. fair may be the entering wedge that will give this city a Saturday half holiday in business affairs this summer. Saturday, July 3, is the day assigned by the fair managers for Tacoma day. It is the day before the 'Glorious Fourth' and is deemed a star occasion for this city. But the day before the Fourth has always been a big business day. To go to Seattle would wreck the day for business. Therefore the Boosters today appointed a committee of Messrs. Greig, Kaufman, Llewellyn, Lee, Dickson, Williams and J. W. Hill to confer with business men and lay before them the importance of taking July 3 as Tacoma day at the fair and of so arranging business to make it a winner.

“To go to Seattle would wreck the day for business.”

The tension between Tacoma's local business interests and the influence of neighboring Seattle is a long-standing theme in the region's history. This debate over the 'half-holiday' mirrors modern civic arguments about productivity, regional tourism, and the economic integration of the Puget Sound area.
