Armed Heist at the Commercial Dock

A shopkeeper at the foot of Pacific Avenue is held at gunpoint in a daring daylight robbery.

Highwaymen entered the confectionery store of John J. Duffy, at the Pacific Avenue entrance to the Commercial Dock, at 8:15 last night. They held up the proprietor at the point of revolvers and escaped after robbing him of a valuable gold stop-watch and a pocketbook containing a small amount of money. Mr. Duffy was alone in the store at the time, and was about to close up for the night. The thieves entered hastily, as though fearing that a pedestrian outside might see them. They ransacked the entire shop but took nothing but the money and the watch.

“The thieves entered hastily, as though fearing that a pedestrian outside might see them.”

The historic Commercial Dock was once a bustling transit point for Tacoma’s waterfront. Today, the area is part of the Thea Foss Waterway redevelopment, having shifted from a center of maritime labor and commerce to a hub of modern urban living and recreation.
