Car Crashes Into Saloon Window

A high-speed collision near Puyallup Avenue results in a vehicle embedded inside a local tavern.

The story, cleaned up

A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.

Mrs. W. H. Hollinshead, wife of the superintendent of the Borden Condensing Company of Auburn, was slightly injured yesterday afternoon when a large touring car driven by Niven McConnell crashed into the 20-horsepower runabout in which Mr. and Mrs. Hollinshead were riding. The accident occurred near the corner of Puyallup Ave. and East C St. After the two cars had crashed together, the touring car careened to one side and slid awkwardly to the sidewalk and directly into the show window of the Depot saloon, where it came to a stop, half inside the saloon. Considering the impact of the two cars, the fact that the occupants were only slightly injured appears remarkable.

“The touring car careened to one side, and slid awkwardly to the sidewalk and directly into the show window of the Depot saloon, where it came to stop, half inside the saloon.”

This collision, involving early automobiles navigating Tacoma's industrial district, highlights how the 'auto-boom' brought new dangers to city streets. The intersection of Puyallup and C Street remains a busy corridor today, though the horse-drawn era sensibilities were clearly still giving way to the chaotic reality of motoring.
