The Iron Horse Makes Tacoma its Home

The Great Northern Railroad shifts its western terminus to Tacoma, promising a population boom and shifting the city's status in the eyes of national rail agents.

The story, cleaned up

A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.

Great Northern passenger service will begin from Tacoma May 23, according to official announcement of the Hill officials. This advent of the Great Northern will put the terminus of the line at Tacoma instead of Seattle. It means that trains will be made up here. The conductors, engineers and other trainmen will live here and the commissary department will have to be here. All this will add considerably to the population and business of Tacoma and will also be a great advertisement for the city, as every Great Northern ticket agent along the whole line system will thereafter have the fact called to his attention that Tacoma is on the map and that this city is the western terminus of the road. Heretofore ticket agents in the East have always looked pained and almost insulted if a passenger asked for a ticket to Tacoma. In addition to giving better service, the Oriental Limited of the Great Northern will operate over the Burlington to Chicago, by way of the Mississippi valley, thus opening up this whole valley to Tacoma.

“Heretofore ticket agents in the East have always looked pained and almost insulted if a passenger asked for a ticket to Tacoma.”

Railroad expansion defined Tacoma's growth in the early 20th century, as the city jockeyed with Seattle for primacy in the Pacific Northwest. Today, infrastructure battles have shifted from transcontinental rail terminals to the logistics and warehouse hubs that characterize the region's current economic identity.
