The Weekend Showdown at Fern Hill

Local amateur baseball clubs face off in a tight, low-scoring match.

The story, cleaned up

A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.

One of the most exciting games of the amateur baseball season was played on the Fern Hill grounds Sunday, the first Fern Hill team defeating the second team by a score of 6 to 3. The feature of the game was the pitching of Ernest McBreen of the second team, who held down the heavier lads to two hits for five innings. The batteries were Will Johnson and Oried for the first team, and Ernest McBreen and Williams for the second team. The Fern Hill boys have shown good form and will commence playing scheduled games in the near future.

Fern Hill, a historic neighborhood in Tacoma, remains a distinct part of the city's topography today. While formal leagues have replaced these early amateur field games, the community spirit surrounding youth and amateur sports remains a bedrock of the Tacoma social calendar.
