The City Park Fight: Neighborhoods Clash Over $750,000 Bond Issue

Tacoma's civic groups remain divided as the Round Table Club backs park funding, while the West End Improvement Club resists without a guarantee of local green space.

The Round Table club, last night, after full discussion of the matter in a meeting at the home of W. C. Davi, North Fifth and C streets, voted to favor the bond issue of $750,000 for park and boulevard purposes. While the Round Table was doing this, the Twelfth Street Improvement Club was voting against the bond issue. The West End people want a park in the West End and the club does not feel like endorsing the proposed bond issue unless the West End is to get some recognition.

Debates over equitable resource distribution and park access remain central to Tacoma city planning today. Just as the West Enders refused to support city-wide bonds without local guarantees, modern neighborhoods continue to demand specific returns on their tax investments.
