The High School Baseball Slugfest

While the Tigers dominated the scorecard, a young pitcher from Puyallup signaled the rise of a new local talent.

The story, cleaned up

A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.

The Tigers walloped Puyallup High School 17 to 2 yesterday at Athletic Park, but that does not signify that the schoolboy teams around this section will do it. In fact, some uneasiness was occasioned the rooters for other scholastic teams by the way the Puyallup twirler, Boatman, handled the sphere. A little better playing in the field will make the Puyallup team able to interest most any of the high school teams in this section.

Youth sports reporting in 1909 focused heavily on the individual 'twirler' (pitcher) and the potential for a team's future development. While the score was lopsided, the attention given to a young pitcher's talent reflects the perennial Tacoma interest in high school athletics and talent scouting.
