Phone Line Planned for Road to the Mountain

A new telegraph and telephone line will connect Tacoma to Longmire Springs.

The story, cleaned up

A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.

A telephone franchise was today granted by the county commissioners to John M. Bell for a telephone and telegraph line to be constructed from the city limits of Tacoma along the new Mt. Tacoma-Canyon road to Longmire Springs. According to the franchise, the line is to be in operation within eight months. The telephone line will be used without cost by the county for county business. Telephone boxes will be attached to the poles about every three miles along the way, and keys to the boxes will be rented to travelers and to farmers living in the district.

The infrastructure expansion to Mt. Rainier (then Mt. Tacoma) helped codify the park as a destination for the growing city. Today, access to the mountain remains a critical civic and environmental issue for Tacoma residents.
