Jess Baker’s Shutout Victory at the Athletic Grounds

A dominant pitching performance led the Tacoma Tigers to a 2-0 victory over Vancouver, silencing doubters and marking a triumphant start to the season.

The story, cleaned up

A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.

Jess Baker wound up his pitching arm and held the diamond for nine innings yesterday afternoon, while a thousand fans grinned their approval. Tacoma 2, Vancouver 0. It was Baker's first appearance in the season's play and he showed all the earmarks of a second Waddell. Kellackey was behind the bat, and the fans who thought the Tigers would be forever blasted by the absence of Danny Shea are beginning to believe there are others also. The fielding squad played ball all the way and helped to contribute those nine goose eggs. Tacoma put up an errorless game. In the third inning, Suess led off and plumped one right over the third baseman's head for three sacks. Cartwright followed with a drive that brought Suess home. In the eighth, Cartwright got a start and, after Hurley had sacrificed him along, Kellackey came with a fine smash that put another run on the scoreboard. Vancouver never got beyond first base during the entire game.

“The fans who thought the Tigers would be forever blasted by the absence of Danny Shea are beginning to believe there are others also.”

Tacoma’s passion for local baseball has a deep history, even if the 'Athletic Grounds' have long since been paved over. Modern fans often grapple with the same 'roster anxiety' that Tacoma supporters felt in 1909 when their star player, Danny Shea, was traded to Seattle.
