A Sidewalk Built on Broken Promises

A Tacoma resident claims the city has repeatedly ignored his warnings that a crumbling, elevated sidewalk poses a severe threat to local children.

Although he has made three complaints to Commissioner McGregor concerning the dangerous sidewalk in front of his home, W. H. Hawkins, of 2523 Yakima Avenue, declares that the city officials have neglected to repair the damage. The sidewalk, which is elevated on bulkheading, fell in last winter and is a menace to pedestrians and small children.

Public safety complaints regarding infrastructure maintenance remain a staple of municipal politics. In 1909, the issue was elevated sidewalks on bulkheading; today, Tacoma residents grapple with similar frustrations over neglected sidewalk repairs and ADA accessibility issues.
