Tacoma’s Growing Pains: A City Parched

Citizens demand answers as reservoir delays and equipment failures leave South End neighborhoods with dwindling water pressure.

The story, cleaned up

A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.

The first burst of warm sunshine in Tacoma brought out the garden hose and it also cut down the water pressure. Citizens in the South End complain that the lack of pressure was a factor in causing the total destruction of a residence there by fire recently, and there is considerable uneasiness over the water situation in Tacoma now. Work on the Delhi street reservoir is not finished and will not be for a few weeks yet. Work on the Alaska street reservoir has stopped and it will not be resumed until the other reservoir is put in service, as it cannot go forward without putting the whole system out of service. A call is now coming from city officials for more machinery for the South Tacoma wells. The wells, according to Commissioner McGregor, are now producing about 9,000,000 gallons, though the original machinery contract guaranteed to pump 20,000,000 gallons.
