Drayman Injured in Downtown Accident

A routine delivery turned violent when a wagon wheel struck a rut near the local hospital.

The story, cleaned up

A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.

William Nelson, driver of a dray for J. W. Cairns, was painfully injured Tuesday morning in an accident. While near St. Ignatius hospital, a wheel of the dray dropped into a deep rut and upset the vehicle. Nelson was thrown under the heels of his horses, and one of them kicked him twice in the breast, seriously injuring him. One leg was also badly hurt.

“A wheel of the dray dropped into a deep rut and upset the vehicle.”

Infrastructure maintenance was as much a civic headache in 1900 as it is today; the rut that caused this accident was likely a hazard on an unpaved or poorly maintained street near the hospital site.
