Tragedy at Lake Alcove

A Mansfield bank president drowns during an afternoon swim.

Walter M. Long, president of the Mansfield bank, was drowned in Lake Alcove, three miles west of Pateros, Sunday afternoon. He was wading and suddenly lurched forward, falling into a hole, it is believed. L. H. Meritt, cashier of the bank, and Harold Whalley, a farmer, who were with Mr. Long, made every effort to recover the body, and efforts at resuscitation were made. Mr. Long was born in Missouri. He was 32 years old. His widow and two young sons survive. The body was brought to Mansfield and the funeral was held Wednesday at 10:30 a.m.

“He was wading and suddenly lurched forward, falling into a hole, it is believed.”
