An Ungrateful Hunter on the Bay

A local man's efforts to help a neighbor land a deer are met with cold indifference.

The story, cleaned up

A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.

Last Sunday, as Mr. Watson Rodenberger was going down the Bay, he saw two dogs chasing a deer into the Bay and after hard rowing succeeded in overtaking it and cutting its throat. By this time the hunter made his appearance on the beach. This ungrateful man took the whole deer without dividing, or even thanking Mr. Rodenberger. Wonder who he is?

Community norms around shared resources like hunting have shifted significantly since the 19th century, yet the frustration over a lack of basic neighborly manners remains a timeless local grievance.
