Swift Justice for a Railroad Theft

A man caught stealing from a freight car is arrested, tried, and sentenced to the penitentiary within the span of a few days.

The story, cleaned up

A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.

Friday morning, L. K. Paskill, the Northern Pacific agent at Ritzville, was notified from Pasco that seven cars on the through freight had been opened and goods taken, and that Shannon, the conductor on the freight, had arrested a man whom he found with some of the goods. In the evening of the same day, Mr. Holcomb, prosecuting attorney, received similar news from the company's agent at Pasco, with the exception that the crime was committed in Adams county and asking that a complaint be sworn out. Mr. Paskill swore to a complaint before D. J. Zent charging said man with burglary. The warrant was placed in the hands of the sheriff, who landed the man in Ritzville jail Sunday night. On being brought before Justice Zent Tuesday morning, the man gave his name as Paul K. DeHines. Hon. N. T. Caton was appointed to defend. DeHines entered a plea of guilty and waived further examination. The case did not have long to wait, for while the trial was in progress in justice court, Judge C. H. Neal arrived. The judge convened court at once, heard the plea, and fixed the penalty at one year in the penitentiary. DeHines will be taken to Walla Walla as soon as the state of the railroad will permit.

“The experience of the trip would fill more space than we care to devote to that sort of news.”

This rapid judicial process reflects a time when the railroad company acted as a primary source of law enforcement, with company agents effectively driving the criminal proceedings for crimes committed against their property.
