Brawl at Skip Lee's Saloon Leaves Bystanders Maimed

A violent late-night fight involving billiard cues and brass knuckles forces a call for better police protection in the growing town.

The story, cleaned up

A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.

A fight occurred at Skip Lee's saloon Saturday night in which billiard cues, balls, slingshots, and brass knuckles are said to have been freely used. Lee carries a badly disfigured countenance this week as a gentle reminder that he had a tough customer. Van Bennett, who happened to be passing at the time, received a billiard ball in one eye, which may cause him the loss of that useful member. Some ladies who were passing about the same time were terror-stricken by seeing a drunk following them with a knife in his hand. If we must have saloons in this town and the consequent saloon brawls, we ought to have police protection. It is a burning shame that respectable people cannot travel along the street without running the chance of being made the victim of some drunken fool's billiard ball or knife at every turn.

This editorial outcry highlights the tension between the rowdy nightlife of a frontier boomtown and the desire for a respectable, orderly civic life. It echoes modern frustrations when public safety initiatives struggle to keep pace with rapid downtown development.
