Kennewick's First Ball Team Hits the Diamond

A scrappy group of locals forms a baseball squad to challenge the Pasco Pea Greens, marking the town’s athletic debut.

The story, cleaned up

A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.

The boys of Kennewick could not stand to see the season pass without this town having a team in the field. Saturday they got together and organized a team and went over to Pasco to give the Pea Greens a try out. Of course they didn't win the game; they did not go over with that expectation, but they did do a pretty good stunt at ball playing. The score, after the final spasm, stood 15 to 10 in favor of the Pascoites.

Long before modern league play, Kennewick's competitive spirit was defined by these early, informal rivalries between neighboring towns. The 'Pea Greens' moniker for Pasco is a classic example of regional trash-talking that still persists in the Tri-Cities today.
