In 1905 a county-seat bank held the wheat money, the mortgage payments and the savings of an entire Big Bend town, so an officer accused of 'misappropriation' was accused of robbing his neighbours. May's case was disposed of in a few lines of a Boston docket — a defendant with means, out on bail, while the paperwork drifted. Substitute wire fraud and a federal courtroom in Yakima and the shape of the story has not changed at all.
