Winter Carnival Comes to Conconully

The county seat prepares for its first-ever winter sports festival, featuring ice races, skating, and the crowning of a carnival queen.

The story, cleaned up

A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.

Great preparations are being made by the people of Conconully for a carnival of winter sports to be held there on the 29th and 30th of this month. An extended program has been prepared and prizes will be offered for all sorts of winter sports. Skating races and ski races will form a prominent part of the program. This is the first affair of the kind ever held in the county and is receiving support from all parts. A dance will be given each evening of the carnival. The election of a carnival queen is now in progress at the capital city and coronation ceremonies will take place at the hall there on the evening of January 29.

“This is the first affair of the kind ever held in the county and is receiving support from all parts.”

In 1909, rural communities created their own winter entertainment through community-led festivals. Today, these traditions survive as local boosters continue to use seasonal events to draw visitors and reinforce small-town civic pride.
