A New 'Monte Carlo' in Fairhaven

Two entrepreneurs prepare to open a lavish new club and billiard room on McKenzie Street.

The story, cleaned up

A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.

Messrs. Thos. H. Chaney and Ben H. Dettmer are fitting up a new establishment called The Spokane, which they expect to open next Saturday evening. The business will occupy two spacious rooms on the ground floor of a new two-story building at the northwest corner of Eleventh and McKenzie streets. The corner room will have superb offices in front for counting rooms and a cigar stand; the remainder of the room will be used as the bar and billiard room. The adjoining room will be used as a club room and will be fitted up with all the most superb appurtenances of an establishment of that kind, equaling in style and elegance the richest places of the kind in Monte Carlo or Baden Baden.

“The establishment will be conducted upon the strictest regulations of good order.”

In 1890, Fairhaven was selling itself as a cosmopolitan boomtown, using European luxury destinations as marketing copy to attract investment. The site at 11th and McKenzie remains a central hub in the historic district today.
