Fairhaven Secures Its Water Supply

Stockholders rally to fund a new water system, promising pure water and fire protection by May.

The story, cleaned up

A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.

Last night at the office of the Fairhaven Land company was held a meeting of the trustees and stockholders of the Fairhaven Water company. The subscription books were opened and $89,000 of the $100,000 of stock was subscribed. Superintendent Connor says the pipe is now being laid at a rate of about one thousand feet per day and the work will be complete and in operation by May 1st. This will be good news for the citizens of Fairhaven, all of whom will be able to have an abundance of pure water for culinary purposes and the city will have ample protection in case of fire.

Infrastructure expansion was the essential precursor to urban survival in 1890. This rapid, private-sector mobilization to secure a water supply highlights the civic autonomy Fairhaven's boosters were fighting to maintain before their eventual consolidation into the city of Bellingham.
