A Thief in the Night at the Bremer Home
A burglary attempt leaves a family home ransacked, leading to a warning for Olympia's citizens.
The story, cleaned up
A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.
On Saturday evening last, the house of Mr. Wm. Bremer was entered through the front window by some person who deliberately proceeded to make an examination for money or valuables. But being disappointed, the intruder carried off a package of personal bills and bills of goods recently purchased by Mr. Bremer in San Francisco. The bills were in an envelope, and the thief probably thought that there was something valuable contained therein, but being disappointed, the package was returned to Mr. Bremer's dwelling on Thursday, during the temporary absence of the family. It would be well for our citizens to be on the look out for suspicious characters who may be floating about.
“It would be well for our citizens to be on the look out for suspicious characters who may be floating about.”
Petty crime and the violation of the home have been constant concerns in Olympia since its inception. This report, however, offers a rare glimpse into the specific nature of frontier property crimes—where even a failed thief would occasionally return 'worthless' documents upon realizing their mistake.
