Labor Council Boycotts New Elks Building

Building trades council declares new Elks lodge unfair and warns union workers to stay off the job.

The story, cleaned up

A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.

The Elks new lodge building has been officially placed unfair by the building trades council, and all members of organized labor should bear that fact in mind. Every possible effort was put forth by the building trades to settle the difficulties without recourse to such drastic measures, without avail. It is reported that a Mr. Sampson told workmen he induced to come from Seattle that he had effected a compromise with the Trades Council so that the work was fair. If Mr. Sampson made that statement, he lied deliberately as he never visited the Trades Council. All workmen who are members of organized labor are warned to keep away from this work until it has been declared fair by the proper authorities.

“If Mr. Sampson made that statement he lied deliberately as he never visited the Trades Council.”

The conflict over construction site labor standards and 'unfair' listings reflects ongoing tensions in the building trades, where labor unions exert economic pressure on developers who refuse to sign union-standard agreements.
