Mapping the Road to Monticello

Commissioners finish surveying a new route from Olympia to the Cowlitz River, planning to bridge the gap between territorial settlements.

The story, cleaned up

A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.

The commissioners appointed by the recent legislature, Messrs. F. Kennedy, J. W. Wiley and Isaac Hays, to survey a territorial road from Olympia to Monticello, agreeable to a bill passed for the location of a road between those places, have discharged the duty assigned them, and will, we think, be able to make a favorable report thereon. From Mr. R. Lewis, who was engaged in the survey, we learn that the bearings of the route from Olympia to the forks of the Cowlitz river, was about 80 degrees west of south, and from the forks to Monticello, about 5 or 6 degrees east of south. The route is represented as entirely practicable—for most of the way passing over high ground, without any serious hills to be surmounted—although to make a good wagon road, much labor will be required, as it will have to be constructed for more than 3/4 of the distance, through a timbered country, though generally, not very heavy. The route crosses the Chehalis river twice, in consequence of an elbow formed by that stream—at the farthest crossing of which, a bridge can be constructed without any difficulty, and at light expense.

“The route is represented as entirely practicable—for most of the way passing over high ground, without any serious hills to be surmounted.”

This road survey laid the groundwork for the north-south connectivity that eventually became the I-5 corridor. The challenges of navigating the Cowlitz and Chehalis rivers remain familiar themes in Washington's infrastructure debates today.
