The story, cleaned up
A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.
W. D. Scott, who figured as a capitalist for a brief period in Seattle and then dropped to the place of commercial traveler for a San Francisco tobacco house, was arrested by Deputy Sheriff Woolery on an attachment process issued out of the probate court at Kitsap County. Scott is the administrator of the estate of Henry Bowman, deceased. At the end of a year’s administration, he failed to file an annual report of his stewardship as required by law. After a citation was issued and ignored, the court issued an attachment for his person. He is currently out on his own recognizance until he appears in probate court on August 14.
“W. D. Scott, who figured as a capitalist for a brief period in Seattle and then dropped to the place of commercial traveler.”
This incident highlights the chaotic nature of the post-fire boom, where 'capitalists' could appear and vanish as quickly as their fortunes. It serves as a reminder of the accountability issues inherent in frontier economic systems.
