Building the Foundation of a County
Chehalis County puts a massive $300,000 bond measure to the voters to fund bridges, roads, and infrastructure across Grays Harbor.
The Board of County Commissioners of Chehalis County has scheduled a special election for May 23, 1891, to seek voter approval for two major bond issues. The first, totaling $224,500, is earmarked for the construction of dozens of bridges across the Chehalis, Wishkah, and Humptulips rivers, as well as the building and improvement of extensive road networks reaching from Grays Harbor to the ocean and inland toward the Quinualt lake. A second measure for $85,000 is proposed to fund the existing debts of the county. The ballot measure signifies a period of rapid public investment and infrastructure expansion across the region.
“Bridge across the Humptulips river... Road from Montesano to Satsop river... Road up Williams' creek.”
This infrastructure blitz illustrates the rapid development of the Grays Harbor region in the 1890s. The projects listed—many connecting mills and ranches—laid the literal and figurative groundwork for the modern map of Chehalis (now Grays Harbor) County.
