Passing of a Walla Walla Pioneer

Gerhard Krack, a German immigrant and long-time resident, passes away at the local hospital following a brief illness.

The story, cleaned up

A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.

Gerhard Krack, a highly respected and old time resident of Walla Walla, died at the Walla Walla hospital this morning at 5 o'clock of pleuro-pneumonia after a 10-days' illness. Mr. Krack was 78 years of age and was a native of Germany. He is survived by six children: Herman, Otto, and Miss Alma of Seattle; Hugh of Butte; Mrs. Frank Knott of Walla Walla; and Louis. Miss Alma arrived from Seattle a few days ago to attend her father, and Herman arrived this morning from Seattle to attend the funeral. The funeral will occur from the First Congregational church Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock.

“Gerhard Krack, a highly respected and old time resident of Walla Walla, died.”

Obituaries like this provide a vital record of the immigrant generation that helped establish the civic and social structures of Walla Walla. The specific focus on family members traveling from as far as Seattle and Butte underscores the importance of the telegraph and rail in coordinating final goodbyes at the turn of the century.
