Harvest Prospects Dim on Eureka Flat

Local farmers report a disappointing wheat yield, with some fields failing entirely as moisture levels hit historic lows.

The story, cleaned up

A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.

John Hoffman, who is farming something like 2,400 acres on Eureka Flat, returned from a trip through that district and said that if an average of 15 to 18 bushels per acre are obtained, farmers may consider themselves in luck. Some fields will average better, but in many instances, whole fields of spring wheat and some fall wheat will hardly be worth the cutting. Many farmers will be compelled to buy their seed wheat this fall. Lum Hale, farming two sections on the flat, reports his spring wheat will go about 20 bushels, but a section of fall wheat is practically a failure. The year’s deficiency in rainfall passed the four-inch mark this morning, the greatest deficiency ever recorded since the establishment of the local bureau.

“Many farmers, it is believed, will be compelled to buy their seed wheat this fall.”

Drought and crop yields remain the primary existential anxiety for the Walla Walla region. This report reflects the same tension between seasonal ambition and the reality of arid-land farming that persists in the Columbia Basin today.
