Armed Hold-up in Wright Park
A Tacoma resident reports being robbed of his last 50 cents by two masked men near the bandstand in Wright Park.
The story, cleaned up
A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.
John Benson, living at 220 1/2 South I street, reports that he was held up last night while going through Wright Park. While walking along one of the paths leading from the bandstand, he was confronted by two masked men. He attempted to pass them, but was prevented by the younger one, who drew a gun with the quickness and grace of long practice, accompanied by the thug's usual salutation, 'Hands up.' Benson told them to go about their business, which they immediately did, and took from him 50 cents, all the money he had. The police were notified of the affair, but a quick and thorough search of the neighborhood failed to reveal any trace of the men.
“He drew a gun with the quickness and grace of long practice, accompanied by the thug's usual salutation, 'Hands up.'”
While Wright Park remains a central gem for Tacoma today, reports of muggings and public safety concerns are a persistent chapter in the park's long history.
