Local Produce Dominates at Seattle Land Products Show

Despite a rushed preparation, White Bluffs and Hanford growers sweep grand prizes in grape and apple categories at a major Seattle exhibition.

White Bluffs and Hanford valley growers secured top honors at the Land Products Show in Seattle, according to a letter from W. D. Mackay. Despite having a small display, the local growers took grand sweepstakes in grapes and first prizes in Winter Bananas and Arkansas Blacks. Mackay noted that had the growers prepared properly, they would have likely swept every category, citing superior tomatoes and squash that were overlooked simply due to incorrect display counts or insufficient preparation time.

“I saw no Concords in the whole Show that were equal to what he ordinarily sends to market.”

This reflects the early 20th-century boosterism of Washington’s inland agricultural valleys, where regional identity was tightly coupled to horticultural success at statewide exhibitions.
