Searching for a New Commissioner

Following a resignation, Kennewick looks to local talent to fill a seat on the county commission.

The story, cleaned up

A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.

On account of Mr. Sims' resignation as commissioner, it will be necessary for the citizens of this commissioner's district to select another man and present his name for appointment to the judge of the superior court and the board. Kennewick is the only town in this commissioner's district and a man who knows the needs of and is in sympathy with the people in this end of the county should be recommended. The name of Ray F. Dean has been suggested by several, and the Courier believes he is just the man for the place. He has been a resident here long enough to be thoroughly conversant with our affairs. He has the great advantage of legal training, which greatly adds to his usefulness in public service. The citizens of this district will do well in uniting to secure the appointment of Mr. Dean.

“a man who knows the needs of and is in sympathy with the people in this end of the county should be recommended.”

The practice of selecting local appointees to fill vacancies before an election remains a common civic mechanism, often subject to the same local political lobbying and 'who you know' advocacy seen here in 1905.
