Stagecoach Accident Injures Senator-Elect

J. M. Snow breaks his leg after jumping from a runaway stage on a dangerous mountain road.

The story, cleaned up

A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.

J. M. Snow, senator-elect from Yakima and Douglas counties, while traveling from Ellensburg to Waterville, via the Ellensburg & Okanogan stage line, Tuesday, met with a serious accident which will lay him up for some time. The road between Ellensburg and the river is a very steep and dangerous one, and as the brake gave way at one of the precipitous places in the road, Mr. Snow jumped to save worse results, and fractured the bones of his leg. He was conveyed to King’s, in Calockem Valley, to have his injuries dressed.

Travel through the Cascades was once a life-or-death risk for early politicians. Snow's injury highlights how fragile the connection was between rural Washington districts before the advent of modern highway infrastructure.
