A young man preparing to move his hogs north from Island County suffered a gruesome accident when he mistook a loaded chamber for an empty one, resulting in a bullet that pierced his heart and shoulder.

The story, cleaned up

A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.

Booth, a young man well-to-do runner living about three miles northeast of Island City, met with a terrible accident on foot Monday evening. It seems he was making preparations to start up country with a lot of hogs, and had procured a seven-shooting revolver, which he was repairing. He had drawn six cartridges, and supposing that his arm as he had been used to handling a six-shooter, his wife told him there was another load in the pistol but he curiously proceeded with a file to repair the hammer with the muzzle pointed toward him and the cylinder clasped between his knees. Suddenly, as might be expected, there was a report, and Mr. Booth lay on the floor shot. The ball entered just below the breast bone on the left side and passed upward and lodged both of the left shoulder blade. Medical aid was at once summoned, but it is now thought that saving him is naturally when considering there were few chances out of firm life.

This 1876 account of a fatal firearm accident highlights the ever-present dangers of frontier life and the lack of safety protocols in handling weapons. While modern gun safety education has drastically reduced such accidental deaths, the story serves as a grim reminder of how quickly a moment of carelessness or assumption can lead to irreversible tragedy, a theme that resonates with contemporary discussions on public safety and accident prevention.
