A Barber's Final Journey

The community mourns the loss of John Morgan Buckingham, a dedicated barber and long-time resident of the Garden Tracts.

The story, cleaned up

A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.

Following a two-month illness, John Morgan Buckingham passed away at 11:30 Sunday night at his home in the Garden Tracts. Funeral services were held at the Methodist church, after which his body was transported on Northern Pacific train No. 4 for burial in his former home in Iowa. Born in Flint County, England, in 1840, Buckingham immigrated to the U.S. at age seven. He spent 50 years working as a barber, a profession he served with distinction. He leaves behind his wife, Caroline, three daughters, and a legacy of quiet, consistent citizenship.

“He was an honor to his profession and to every community in which he lived.”

This reflects the transient nature of early 20th-century settlers in Kennewick, many of whom maintained deep ties to their 'home' states in the Midwest even after moving to Washington.
