The story, cleaned up

Thursday night Mrs. George Hubbard was awakened by a brilliant light shining in the kitchen window. Thinking the house was on fire she called for her son who was sleeping upstairs. As soon as she called the light went out and they could hear someone scrambling over the dune to get away. When they went out nobody could be seen but it was evident that someone with a flashlight had been trying to tamper with the telephone wires.
“As soon as she called the light went out and they could hear someone scrambling over the dune to get away.”
Intrusion and the security of private property remain common anxieties. While telephone wire tampering is a relic of the era, the feeling of being vulnerable in one's own home resonates strongly with contemporary crime reporting.
