The Great Strawberry Heist: A Town’s Sweetest Mystery

When a local dignitary donated an overflowing bucket of cherries and strawberries to the Snohomish newspaper office, they vanished by nightfall—leaving behind only gratitude and a very full belly.

The story, cleaned up

A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.

Our respected fellow-citizen, J. N. Low, Esq., brought to our office some of the huge strawberris ever seen in this place. Mr. Wilbur loaned us at line lot of cherried. Thanks for your good will.

We, that is the how, feel like devoting a whole column of compliments to Mr. John V. Low, who so generously brought in an overflowing bucket of large and delicious strawberries; at night of the thanksgiving feast of our civic, suddenly became illuminated with a broad admonition made, and, oh ye gods! how those strawberries vanished.

Mr. Stinson and Wakefield logs up the Snohomish and part of Mr. Duvall's up the Snoqualmie, broke loose last week, but were caught in the boom above town and will be exposed unless the river rises still higher. There is nearly a million feet of logs moored above town waiting till in the river so as to be safely driven to Priest Point.

This lighthearted account of community generosity highlights how local newsrooms once served as social hubs where civic pride and shared resources were celebrated. It mirrors modern efforts to support local agriculture and small businesses, reminding us that Snohomish has long been a place where neighbors look out for one another.
