A Civil War Veteran’s Quiet Exit

After scraping by in Oysterville, a former soldier finds a path to a dignified retirement at a veteran's home.

The story, cleaned up

A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.

Monday morning, a person departed from Oysterville who had by his singular habits become a familiar figure on our streets. C. C. Dobbs, a veteran of the late war, lately from Dallas, Oregon, arrived in Oysterville several months ago almost a physical wreck. The vigorous air of this region soon braced him up, and he found employment at digging clams at 5 cents a bucketful, upon which scanty sustenance he eked out an existence. J. H. Turner made application to the Western Branch of the Soldiers' National Home, Leavenworth, Kansas, for his admittance, with the result that on Monday last poor Dobbs departed for there, a happier man, with care and a comfortable home in sight.

“The vigorous air of this region soon braced him up, and he found employment at digging clams at 5 cents a bucketful.”

This account of a destitute Civil War veteran highlights the limited social safety net of the 1880s, where survival often relied on the charity of neighbors and the eventual intervention of institutional homes for veterans.
