Election Fever Grips Aberdeen
Skyrockets and torchlights marked a rowdy political rally on Heron Street as supporters celebrated the national ticket.
The story, cleaned up
A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.
The democracy of Aberdeen was jubilant Saturday night, the occasion being the ratification of the nominations of the Chicago convention. Sky-rockets, torchlights and banners marked the route of the procession as it marched through the principal streets of the city. Some of the legends on the transparencies were very catching, especially we noted: '10,000,000 acres of land returned to settlers by Grover,' 'The voice of Organized Labor: No Trade Dollar Reid,' and 'The winning ticket, Cleve Steve.' After the procession, the crowd assembled on Heron street, where they were addressed by Jno. J. Carney and others. After the speaking, a number of democrats gathered together to become better acquainted with the visiting brethren, and the introduction was gracefully performed by S. Stapleford, president of the democrat club.
“Sky-rockets, torchlights and banners marked the route of the procession as it marched through the principal streets of the city.”
Election cycles have always transformed downtown Aberdeen, with Heron Street serving as the historic focal point for public assembly. The political slogans of 1892 reflect the same anxieties over land ownership and labor power that still define regional politics in Grays Harbor today.
