Thief Raids Adventist Camp in South Tacoma

While campers attended services in the main tent, a local man allegedly pilfered valuables from their temporary settlement.

The story, cleaned up

A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.

O. A. Connell was arrested by Officer McQuillin this morning and booked at the police station on the charge of petty larceny. Connell, it is alleged, invaded the camp of the Adventists at South Tacoma last night and made away with a collection of various articles. The thief got in his work while most of the Adventists were attending services in the large tent, and succeeded in getting some valuable plunder.

“The thief got in his work while most of the Adventists were attending services in the large tent.”

This petty crime report highlights the vulnerability of the tent camps that were once a standard part of regional religious life. It serves as a reminder that even in early religious gatherings, community members had to contend with the realities of urban crime and police surveillance.
