Music, Supper, and St. Patrick's Cheer
Liberty Hall hosts a packed house as the local band performs to appreciative neighbors.
The story, cleaned up
A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.
As Charles M. Sanford said in expressing the community’s appreciation to the band, 'there is nothing like having something good to eat and good music, to bring out a crowd.' And that combination certainly worked at the band concert and supper given in Liberty hall Monday evening. The band concert began at 7 o’clock, followed by vocal selections by Miss Helen Craig and Miss Nellie Baxter of Hanford, and by Mrs. F. A. English and Mrs. Alex Parke of White Bluffs. The sentiment of most of the songs was in keeping with St. Patrick’s Day. The dance that followed lasted until midnight. The gross receipts were around $150, which will go direct to the band.
“There is nothing like having something good to eat and good music, to bring out a crowd.”
Community halls once anchored the social lives of the Columbia Valley. With the later clearance of the towns for the Hanford project, these gatherings survived only in memory, highlighting the loss of a vibrant civic life in the region.
