Long-Bell Lumber Mill Preparing for Launch

Massive logging operations begin in Longview as the city prepares for its grand industrial opening.

The story, cleaned up

A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.

The first consignment of logs, between 9 and 10 million feet, has been delivered to the Long-Bell Lumber Company, and is now in the ponds at the mill site. These logs were purchased from concerns on the Columbia River. Operations have commenced at Ryderwood, and between 5 and 6 million feet will be ready for transportation by rail via the Great Northern Railway from Vader before July 1, the date of the opening of the huge mill.

“Between 5 and 6 million feet will be ready for transportation by rail... before July 1, the date of the opening of the huge mill.”

Longview was famously a planned company town, constructed by the Long-Bell Lumber Company to support their massive timber operations. This snippet captures the industrial 'boom' phase of the city's creation before it evolved into the modern community it is today.
