This accident highlights the physical hazards inherent in the rapidly growing, poorly lit topography of early 20th-century Tacoma. Many of the 'gulches' described here have since been modified or filled, but the city's rugged terrain remains a defining, if sometimes dangerous, feature of the landscape.
