Mayor Claims Safety Amidst Crime Wave

The Times clashes with Mayor Wright’s assertion of civic order following a string of violent crimes.

Mayor Wright selected an unfortunate time to make public through his official organ, the Ledger, a declaration that there is no lawlessness in Tacoma. Two highway robberies, one burglary and the abduction of a high school girl by the protected criminals of the city, all during the present week, speak for themselves. Mayor Wright evidently does not consider the city to be in the hands of the lawless until the riot guns are called out. Other people think differently, however. The lawbreakers have the community by the throat right now.

“The lawbreakers have the community by the throat right now.”

This reflects a classic political framing war where the incumbent attempts to maintain a positive narrative while local outlets emphasize public safety concerns. Political push-and-pull over crime reporting and municipal accountability is a constant in Tacoma's history.
