A young worker faces the loss of his limb after a horrific accident involving a naphtha launch propeller.
The story, cleaned up
A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.
Lockwood Hansen's right leg was wound around the propeller shaft of a naphtha launch yesterday and the young man will lose the limb. He was taken to the Wayside Mission hospital late last night from his home, and the limb will probably be amputated today. Hansen is but 18 years old and is employed at the Bon Marche. He lives with his parents near Interbay. The boy accompanied a pleasure party on the Sound in a launch yesterday, and when a few miles out in the bay his trousers became entangled in the propeller shaft of the boat.
“when a few miles out in the bay his trousers became entangled in the propeller shaft of the boat.”
This reflects the industrial perils of the era, where small pleasure craft and early motor engines often lacked the safety features of today. The Wayside Mission Hospital was a critical piece of Tacoma’s early healthcare social safety net.
